NORTH BRANFORD — Mary Caruso’s daughters, Sam and Alex Bode, sat at their kitchen table Friday afternoon poring over an architect’s drawings of an addition to their home.

Caruso stacked fresh-baked cookies and brownies on a plate and the two family dogs barked for attention, but Sam, 23, and Alex, 19, were engrossed in the building design and measurements — which would seem surprising if the renovation wasn’t about to change their lives.

The sisters must use wheelchairs because of a degenerative neuro-muscular disease called Friedreich’s ataxia. Construction work at their house over the next year will give them a residential elevator, attached garage, exercise room for therapy and more space to use their wheelchairs — all at no cost to the family.

Volunteers are describing the project as North Branford’s version of ABC’s tear-jerking TV show, “Extreme Home Makeover,” with local architects, builders, excavators, volunteers and fund-raisers coming together to renovate Caruso’s house to fit her family’s needs.

In fact, Caruso was a finalist for the show twice, but wasn’t chosen. A little more than a year ago, family friends decided to take matters into their own hands.

“We’re really trying to get this done for the girls, and Mary’s always doing for other people in town, and I think that’s why everybody’s so excited to help her,” said Sue Monaco, who, with friend Laura Whaley, is heading up a new charity called Open Your Heart to raise money for the project.

Sam was diagnosed with the disease when she was 8 after Caruso noticed she was acting clumsily and falling often, despite being a talented athlete who played basketball and soccer and rode horses. Doctors were stumped and took six months to diagnose Sam, who was slowly losing strength in her legs.

“I bought her a yellow walker, and for her birthday in seventh grade I decorated it and brought it to school for her,” Caruso recalled.

“By the end of seventh grade, I began using a wheelchair,” Sam chimed in.

Alex was diagnosed at about 6 years old, Caruso said. She knew what to look for the second time around, and said it’s common for siblings to have the disease because it’s a genetic disorder.

When they moved into the century-old North Branford Store building at North Street and Foxon Road nine years ago, the sisters weren’t using wheelchairs full time yet. Since then, Caruso has upgraded the kitchen and bathroom along with their bedrooms to accommodate their chairs.

“The disease is progressive. It’s never status quo. You get used to life one way and then something happens and you have to adjust,” Caruso said.

But the disease hasn’t stopped the young women: They attend Southern Connecticut State University, and while Sam’s dream is to intern and work at ESPN sports TV network, Alex is interested in social work.

They live in a dormitory at SCSU during the week and come home on weekends.

In Caruso’s house, the kitchen’s island and counters are about 3 feet high, and lifts in the sisters’ rooms that are built into the ceiling and can reach all the way to the floor carry them out of bed and into their wheelchairs in the morning. She purchased the lifts with a grant.

Caruso also added a ramp along the outside of the house to get from the car to the back door, though it hasn’t been wide enough for EMTs to carry and turn a gurney when Alex had to take a trip to the hospital.

In the winter or on rainy days, taking Sam and Alex out can be risky. Their chairs have slipped and rolled away and they’ve fallen into snowbanks when going from the car to the house, Caruso said.

So Monaco and Whaley decided Caruso at least needed a new attached garage with a lift from the garage to the house for the girls’ wheelchairs. The project grew from there, and architect David Strong has designed a new wing of the home with a second-floor gym for the girls’ exercise therapy equipment, an elevator to get to it and a more spacious family room.

Strong, of Branford-based Strong Ideas architectural firm, is also a distant cousin of Caruso’s — they just met about a year ago after Strong saw an e-mail petition to get Caruso’s family on ABC’s show and realized they were related.

For the past six months, he’s been designing the home’s addition with green aspects in mind: The roofs will have plants, wildflowers and grass growing on them, tree stumps cleared from the yard will be used for porch posts, and a possible wind turbine on the roof may generate electricity, he said.

A neighbor has already donated a small plot of land for Caruso to use for the addition, and companies like Maple Wood Construction, Tanner Tree Services, C. Troiano & Sons Excavating, Eric Anderson Surveyers, Tilcon Connecticut, Wettemann Brothers and Barrett Electric are donating their services.

Caruso said she keeps a list of their names and adds to it in chalk on a section of the living room wall covered with black chalkboard paint to remind her of how much the community has reached out.

“It really gives you strength to deal with things on a daily basis. You don’t feel as isolated because people are always helping,” Caruso said. “It’s really overwhelming.”

Tree clearing began Saturday and a fund-raiser tag sale will be held at Caruso’s home at 1 North St. on Oct. 24. Donations for the renovation can be sent to Open Your Heart, P.O. Box 273, Northford 06472. To get involved in fund-raising or the home construction, e-mail openyourheart09@aol.com.

As the photographic historian of the New Haven Bioregional Group, Maria Tupper has been taking pictures of our life place as we have been passing through it and trying to learn more about it.

The Bioregional Group has had an outdoor event nearly every month since December 2005. In that time Maria has taken many hundreds of photographs of our local area. The pace of a walk, a bike ride, or paddling a canoe, allows a taking in that we often miss in our chaotic, fast-paced lives.

Maria says, "Various journeys through our Bioregion have helped me to see my home of the past 40 years in a new way, so too my time behind the lens has opened my eyes to our local area in a new light. Event: Review of New Haven Fashion Past and Present
This review will be a tribute to New Haven and all that represents New Haven fashion: from vintage to contemporary. The night will begin with a social hour (wine and cheese) where models wearing the contemporary and used outfits circulate among the guests. This opening reception will allow those attending the show after work or school hours an opportunity to relax and mingle. Music will be playing and photo shots of New Haven men and women and "New Haven" looks will be displayed on the wall. The music will stop and a speaker will highlight the outfits from New Haven's top apparel boutique. The showcase will then be followed by a few words offered by New Havener and Project Runway finalist, Emmett McCarthy about his current design ideas and the ways in which New Haven and classic fashion has served as an overall source of creative inspiration.

The last portion will be a tribute to New Haven used and vintage fashion, featuring artfully styled outfits collected from the donations of New Haven's very own contingent of fashionable women. Liberty will introduce its intention to begin a thrift store and also introduce the blog and website Elle C Ess.

This show will serve as a way of joining the city together in an evening of fun, festivity and retrospection, and on behalf of an organization that has sought to uplift New Haveners of all conditions. This event will be the launch of a creative venture undertaken by Liberty Community Services highlighting used and vintage items to support its mission of supporting people who have HIV/AIDS and are homeless.

Emmett McCarthy, Project Runway Finalist and New Havener

"I'm always looking for inspiration, whether it's online or in a vintage store."
Former Project Runway contestant, Emmett McCarthy is memorable mainly for his somewhat controversial aufing and his gracious exit in a hot pink ice skater's costume.

The sixth of eight children in what he describes as a "religious Irish Catholic family," he grew up in New Haven, Connecticut in what he also describes as a "Bloomsbury environment," referring to the early twentieth century English collective of aesthetes, writers and artists. Admitted to the Talented and Gifted Program at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, he went on frequent class trips to NYC for art and cultural education.

The day after he graduated high school, he went straight to NYC and the Fashion Institute of Technology. After two years at FIT, he transferred to the Parson's School of Design. At Parson's he continued a friendship with Tim Gunn that started years before when Tim came to his high school to speak. Most fans of the show don't know this, but Tim and Emmett have been friends for a quarter century.

After his Project Runway appearance, he did what he has always done, got right back to work. "I sought out business advisors. I met with Tim Gunn and a friend of mine who's a branding consultant and another friend who's a financial services consultant and we mapped out the constellation of brands for my business. It's like anything in life. If you want to be successful then you need to reach out to other successful people in their fields."

Of course, for Emmett, a boutique in New York City wasn't enough. He wants a national customer base and for as long as we've known him, that's been the goal he's been working on. Not only has he appeared on QVC this week to sell his bags, but he's also working on a deal with JC Penney for another line of bags. "Not everybody gets the opportunity to shop in New York," he says. "This is a great opportunity to reach out to the people that are really starving for something that's new and exciting and affordable."

"I'm always looking for inspiration, whether it's online or in a vintage store. I can pick up a vintage dress and look at the pattern and see that in a handbag." Last week, after a day out in the shops alone, he came back with a half-dozen bags of vintage items and laid them out in front of us. "Look at that closure," he points out. "Or this!" as he unveils a gorgeous purple velvet maxi-skirt from the seventies. "I'm almost tempted to put this in my window tomorrow to see if it sells!"

How to Achieve "No Makeup" Makeup

Normal Skin:
1.) Concealer is an absolute must! Everyone will benefit from this product. Concealer instantly brightens the eye area. You can also use concealer to hide redness around the nose or on a blemish.
2.) Dust a sheer powder all over face to even out complexion. If you need more coverage, use a dual foundation/powder.
3.) Smile and pop a healthy looking blush to the apples of your cheeks.
4.) Curl your lashes and apply mascara for an instant eye opening effect.
5.) Finish with a sheer lipstick or gloss.

Dry Skin:
1.) Mix concealer with eye cream and apply under eye.
2.) Use a cream or liquid foundation. You can mix with moisturizer to make it more sheer.
3.) Apply a cream blush to the apples of the cheeks for best results. You can use powder blush if you prefer.
4.) Apply pressed powder. This will set the foundation and blush. Optional: To give dull skin a glow, add a sheer, luminizing bronzer to the cheek bones, forehead, and chin.
5.) Curl lashes and apply mascara for an instant eye opening effect.
6.) Finish with tinted lip balm or lip gloss.

Oily Skin:
1.) Use concealer only where needed.
2.) Apply an oil free tinted moisturizer or foundation.
3.) Set with translucent powder.
4.) Smile and pop a matte blush to the apples of the cheeks.
5.) Curl lashes and apply mascara
6.) Finish with a lipstick or lip stain

*if you have more time and want a more defined look, nothing works better than lining the eyes. Smudge with a q-tip to soften.

*Transforming from day to night differs for everyone. I recommend adding a warm-toned bronzer all over and in the crease of the eye. I love multi-functional products! Throw on an extra coat of mascara and finish the look with an opaque lip color.

*Smokey eyes don’t have to be over the top. To achieve this look, simply swipe a charcoal or golden bronze eye shadow to the eyelid, a hi-lighter to the brow bone and blend well-remember to balance the look with a soft lip!

Here's a little info about Ann Lightfoot:

Ann Lightfoot's simple yet elegant jewelry designs are inspired by the natural materials she works with. "The color, cut and shape of a stone dictates each design," says Ann, who creates each of her unique pieces by hand, using precious and semi-precious stones and the finest linen, silk or sterling silver.

Ann's jewelry also reflects her interest in other cultures. After graduating from Harvard College, where she earned a degree in History and Literature, Ann ran a teaching program in Bangkok, Thailand. She has also worked with Cambodian refugees in Thailand, for a non-profit organization in Paris and for a French cosmetics company in New York.

Ann's first jewelry designs were created out of jade medallions and vintage glass stones found in a Shanghai antique market, and she continues to use fine Asian, South American and African beads and pendants in her designs.

Tracy b. here again...with New Arrivals this week.

These sweaters rock!!! They are really well constructed and super soft. The color and hues of these sweaters make them a must have for early spring.

This sweater is the most beautiful color...believe it or not, it goes with anything. I wore a sweater this color all winter and could not get enough of it.

Love this sweater too, once I put it on, I could not take it off.
It can be worn a few ways. It has a continuous loop where the neck is, so it can be worn with it twisted at the neck (shown in first pic) or over the back of the neck like a shawl sweater. 100% cotton.

This sweater is made of super silky super fine cotton.
It has a asymmetrical hem, it is absolutely beautiful in person.

Lastly...a sweater vest in the most beautiful color green.

Welcome to our newly designed blog. Shout out to Rakel Fairful over at creo@ingero.com for matching our blog to our website, she did an amazing job!

Well Listen...I know we are all more than ready for Spring to arrive. So what I propose is you take a look thru the new Spring Arrivals and let yourself dream for a bit.
